Our History

In 2014, Liz’s friend Maranda jokingly asked Liz to officiate her wedding during a dinner discussing her engagement. After some moments of laughter, Maranda seriously asked Liz to become ordained and officiate her wedding because of her background in writing and public speaking. She laughed, went home, and then immediately started Googling what the task would involve. The following day at work, Liz’s friend shared news that he was going to propose to his boyfriend but was already having difficulty finding vendors for their wedding because of their sexuality.

When digging around the internet, it was apparent to Liz that the wedding industry severely lacked openness and understanding for those identifying as LGBTQ. Officiants also did not entirely write their own wedding ceremonies and many did not come from a background in writing or public speaking. Liz launched the business in Minneapolis to give couples a safe space and officiant who would dive into their ceremony, hand-write it without templates, and lead the way for acceptance in the industry.

One year later, Liz was booked over 50 times. As of writing this, Liz has officiated over 400 weddings on two continents in three different languages. Each of the officiants who worked with Liz Rae Weddings has experience in both writing and public speaking as well as story training with Liz.

To this day, the wedding industry still lacks substantial representation of all couples, regardless of race, sexuality or orientation. We hope to change that and continue to be a leading force in promoting acceptance for all. 10% of every wedding booked is donated to The Trevor Project and one hour of time is volunteer by Liz.

When Liz isn’t running this business, she’s studying at UCLA’s TV and Film Comprehensive Writing Program and training  through Faber Publishing’s Writing Program. She works for a tech company during the day and by night, she works in development for a production company and literary management.

She’s visited six out of seven continents. If you haven’t heard from her, she’s probably visitng the seventh.
